Happy Self-Improvement Month! We Have 3 Key Tips to Improve Your Oral Health this Month.

September is Self-Improvement Month, and many people use this month as an opportunity to improve their personal health and appearance, which is why all of us at By Design Dental Implant Center want to share some of our favorite tips for improving your oral health.

Do your best to reduce stress— Stress negatively affects numerous aspects of your life, including mental, physical, and even oral health. Stress contributes to poor dietary choices like drinking too much coffee and soda or eating sugary foods. Excess stress can also fuel bad habits such as teeth grinding and nail biting, which can crack, splinter, and further damage your teeth. To combat stress, find some time for yourself this month. Whether the amount of time is big or small, you will feel a positive impact. Exercising is a great and healthy way to reduce stress, or maybe rediscover a hobby like painting, gardening, or reading. Even just a few moments every day for some deep breathing exercises can make a difference.

Evaluate your dental routine— Positive habits for oral health are key. We’ve all been told how important it is to floss and brush daily, but it’s easy to get lazy. In September, schedules tend to get busier, and with school starting and the holidays approaching, it’s easy to make excuses. Now is the perfect time to re-evaluate your daily dental routine and make sure you are taking care of that smile! Ask yourself these questions when re-evaluating your oral health: Are you brushing twice a day? Are you flossing every night? Are you brushing for a full two minutes every time? These simple tasks prevent future oral health problems, and the extra few minutes will be well worth it in the long run.

Smile more and smile at others— Feeling down? Stressed out at work? Feeling pressure at school? Smiling more, even if you have to try, has been shown to improve mood and decrease stress. Smiling also elevates those around you, and seeing people smile back at you can boost your mood and improve your self-esteem. If you aren’t confident in your smile, try to embrace your smile as your self-improvement this September.
